Lawn Mowing Cost Calculator 2026: Price Per Visit, Per Acre and Per Season
Written by the IntelCalculator.com editorial team | Published by IntelCalculator.com | Last updated October 2026
At the national average in our model, the average cost to mow a lawn is USD 53.09 per visit for a quarter-acre, USD 70.20 for a half-acre and USD 100.00 for one acre. These are modeled estimates, not a market survey.
This lawn mowing cost calculator turns lawn size in square feet (sq ft), mower, terrain and your hourly rate into a price you can defend. It holds twelve linked tools, and the result from one card fills the next. Use them to price one visit, plan a season or test a whole business.
Whether you call it lawn mowing or grass cutting, the price comes from time, size and costs. That is why grass cutting cost can differ by 30 percent or more between two lawns of the same size. This page shows where every dollar in the model comes from.
Three terms often get mixed up. Lawn mowing means cutting, trimming and blowing.
Lawn care adds feeding, weed control and aeration, and landscaping adds design, planting and hardscape. This page prices mowing first, then the lawn care jobs that sit next to it.
This page prices the service of mowing a lawn, not the purchase of a lawn mower. If you want to compare buying a mower with hiring a crew, jump to the do-it-yourself (DIY) section below.
Who Should Use This Calculator
Homeowners use it to check whether a lawn service cost is fair. Lawn care operators and landscape contractors use it to build quotes, set a minimum charge and test profit. Homeowners association (HOA) managers and property managers use it to compare bids across many lots.
Here is what you gain from the twelve cards:
- A price per visit in seconds, built from time rather than guesswork.
- A clear link between lot size, mower speed and labor cost.
- A season plan, a profit check and a DIY comparison in one place.
- A sanity check against the market, shown as a percent of the typical price.
What Does a Standard Mow Include?
A standard mow includes cutting the turf, trimming around obstacles and blowing clippings off hard surfaces. Edging along curbs and beds is a common extra. Bagging, hedge work and cleanup are separate jobs.
Mowing is priced by time, not by area alone. A worker needs the same travel, setup and trimming time on a small lot as on a larger one. Mower speed, slopes, obstacles and grass height then change the cutting time on top of that fixed base.
How Much Does Lawn Mowing Cost in 2026?
The model prices lawn mowing cost per visit with a smooth curve. It starts from a fixed base and adds a variable part that grows more slowly than lot size.
Formula box
Price per visit = (30 + 70 x acres^0.8) x state factor x service level x frequency x (1 – discount)
The 30 USD base covers travel and setup. The 0.8 exponent makes the price grow slower than the lawn, so bigger lots cost less per acre. Both numbers are modeled assumptions, not survey results.
Table 1: National average price by lot size (mow, trim and blow, weekly)
| Lot size | Price per visit | Price per acre |
| 0.10 acre (4,356 sq ft) | USD 41.09 | USD 410.94 |
| 0.25 acre (10,890 sq ft) | USD 53.09 | USD 212.37 |
| 0.50 acre (21,780 sq ft) | USD 70.20 | USD 140.41 |
| 1 acre (43,560 sq ft) | USD 100.00 | USD 100.00 |
| 2 acres | USD 151.88 | USD 75.94 |
| 5 acres | USD 283.67 | USD 56.73 |
At the national average, a half-acre costs 70.20 USD per visit, a one-acre lot costs 100.00 USD and a two-acre lot costs 151.88 USD.
How Much Does It Cost to Mow a 1/4 Acre Lawn?
A quarter-acre lawn is 10,890 sq ft. At the national average, the model prices it at USD 53.09 per visit. In practice, a quarter-acre lot lands near 40 to 75 USD in the model, depending on terrain, obstacles and your rate.
How Much Does It Cost to Mow One Acre?
One acre costs USD 100.00 per visit at the national average. That is lawn mowing price per acre at its simplest, and every other row in Table 1 scales from it. Per-acre pricing is a sanity check, not a quoting method.
Price per acre falls as lots grow. It drops from about 76 USD at two acres to about 57 USD at five acres, and to about 47 USD at ten acres.
Small lots show the opposite: a 5,000 sq ft lawn with a push mower prices at USD 44.74, which is about USD 390 per acre. That is normal, because setup time does not shrink with the lawn.
Lawn Mowing Cost by State in 2026
Readers often search for lawn mowing prices by state, so the full table is below. Local wages, fuel and demand move every yard mowing cost.
The calculator holds a regional factor for the national average and all 50 states, running from 0.82 in Mississippi to 1.35 in Hawaii. Multiply any price by your factor to localize it.
Table 2: State factors and the one-acre price per visit (national curve, USD 100 x factor)
| State | Factor | One acre | State | Factor | One acre |
| Alabama | 0.88 | USD 88 | Montana | 1.00 | USD 100 |
| Alaska | 1.25 | USD 125 | Nebraska | 0.90 | USD 90 |
| Arizona | 1.00 | USD 100 | Nevada | 1.05 | USD 105 |
| Arkansas | 0.85 | USD 85 | New Hampshire | 1.12 | USD 112 |
| California | 1.25 | USD 125 | New Jersey | 1.20 | USD 120 |
| Colorado | 1.10 | USD 110 | New Mexico | 0.92 | USD 92 |
| Connecticut | 1.20 | USD 120 | New York | 1.22 | USD 122 |
| Delaware | 1.05 | USD 105 | North Carolina | 0.97 | USD 97 |
| Florida | 1.00 | USD 100 | North Dakota | 0.92 | USD 92 |
| Georgia | 0.95 | USD 95 | Ohio | 0.92 | USD 92 |
| Hawaii | 1.35 | USD 135 | Oklahoma | 0.88 | USD 88 |
| Idaho | 0.98 | USD 98 | Oregon | 1.10 | USD 110 |
| Illinois | 1.00 | USD 100 | Pennsylvania | 1.00 | USD 100 |
| Indiana | 0.90 | USD 90 | Rhode Island | 1.15 | USD 115 |
| Iowa | 0.88 | USD 88 | South Carolina | 0.93 | USD 93 |
| Kansas | 0.88 | USD 88 | South Dakota | 0.90 | USD 90 |
| Kentucky | 0.88 | USD 88 | Tennessee | 0.95 | USD 95 |
| Louisiana | 0.90 | USD 90 | Texas | 0.97 | USD 97 |
| Maine | 1.05 | USD 105 | Utah | 1.00 | USD 100 |
| Maryland | 1.12 | USD 112 | Vermont | 1.05 | USD 105 |
| Massachusetts | 1.25 | USD 125 | Virginia | 1.05 | USD 105 |
| Michigan | 0.95 | USD 95 | Washington | 1.15 | USD 115 |
| Minnesota | 1.00 | USD 100 | West Virginia | 0.85 | USD 85 |
| Mississippi | 0.82 | USD 82 | Wisconsin | 0.95 | USD 95 |
| Missouri | 0.90 | USD 90 | Wyoming | 0.95 | USD 95 |
Mississippi sits at the low end with a one-acre price of USD 82, and Hawaii sits at the top with USD 135. For a quarter-acre lot, multiply 53.09 USD by your factor, which gives USD 43.53 in Mississippi and USD 71.67 in Hawaii.
These factors are modeled assumptions, not a local survey. To check your own market, compare them with US Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data and US Energy Information Administration gasoline prices, then confirm with local quotes.
Lawn Mowing Cost Per Square Foot
Many readers ask for lawn mowing cost per square foot. The model gives about USD 4.46 per 1,000 sq ft for an 11,000 sq ft lawn. That is under half a cent per square foot.
The number moves with lot size and clutter. A 5,000 sq ft lawn costs about USD 8.95 per 1,000 sq ft, because setup and trimming time stay fixed. A cluttered 6,000 sq ft lot with a walk-behind mower prices at USD 45.14, while an open 12,000 sq ft lot prices at USD 47.96.
That pair shows the trap in square-foot pricing. The small, cluttered lot costs USD 7.52 per 1,000 sq ft, and the big, open lot costs USD 4.00. Use square footage to sanity-check a quote, and use time to build it.
How to Measure Your Lawn Before You Quote
Errors in area are the quiet cause of bad quotes. Measure mowable turf only, and leave out the house, driveway, patios and planting beds.
You can measure in four ways:
- A measuring wheel or tape along each edge.
- A satellite map tool with an area measure.
- A property survey, minus the house, drive and beds.
- Splitting the lot into simple shapes and adding them.
For a rectangle, multiply length by width in feet. The square footage calculator handles that in one step. Use the triangle area calculator for angled lots and the area of a circle calculator for round lawns for odd shapes.
One acre (ac) equals 43,560 sq ft. If you wonder how many square feet are in an acre, that is the number, and 11,000 sq ft works out to about 0.25 acres. Switch between units with the area converter.
How do you calculate the square footage of your lawn? Measure each simple section in feet, multiply length by width, then add the sections and subtract beds and hard surfaces. Save the final area in your customer record, so the next quote takes under a minute.
What Affects Lawn Mowing Prices: Six Factors
Six inputs shape every lawn cutting price in the model. Each one changes time, cost or both.
- Lot size. Larger lots take longer, but the price per acre falls.
- Faster mowers cut mowing time, but not trimming or setup time.
- Terrain and obstacles. Slopes multiply mowing time by 1.1 to 1.5. Obstacles multiply mowing and trimming time by 1.1 to 1.45.
- Grass height. Bi-weekly growth multiplies mowing time by 1.15, tall grass by 1.3 and overgrown grass by 1.8.
- Service level and frequency. More tasks per visit raise the rate, and less frequent visits mean longer grass.
- Local costs. State, wages and fuel shift the price by up to 35 percent.
Mower Types and Real-World Speed
Deck width and speed set how many acres a mower finishes each hour. The model uses real-world figures, not brochure speeds.
Table 3: Mower productivity in the calculator model
| Mower | Acres per hour | Minutes per acre |
| Robot mower | 0.1 | 600 |
| 21-inch push mower | 0.35 | 171 |
| 22-inch self-propelled | 0.5 | 120 |
| 30-inch walk-behind | 0.8 | 75 |
| 36-inch commercial walk-behind | 1.0 | 60 |
| 42-inch riding mower | 1.2 | 50 |
| 54-inch riding mower | 1.7 | 35 |
| 48-inch zero-turn | 2.2 | 27 |
| 60-inch zero-turn | 2.9 | 21 |
| 52-inch stand-on | 3.2 | 19 |
| Tractor with batwing | 4.5 | 13 |
In the calculator model, a 21-inch push mower covers 0.35 acres per hour, a 48-inch zero-turn covers 2.2 and a 60-inch zero-turn covers 2.9. Use the term zero-turn for the mower class, though some shops write zero turn mower.
Cards 1 to 3: Price, Rate and Time
Card 1: Basic Mowing Quote Calculator
Card 1 builds a lawn mowing quote calculator from time. Pick the lawn size, mower, terrain, obstacles, grass condition, hourly rate and minimum charge. Use the output as your lawn mowing estimate.
Formula box
Price = max(minimum charge, (acres / mower speed x terrain x obstacles x grass + trim time + 0.25 hour setup) x hourly rate)
Trim time = (0.1 + 0.2 x square root of acres) x obstacles, in hours
The card returns the price, total job time, labor-based price, price per acre and a market position. Market position compares your price with the typical price for that lot size. Below 85 percent can erode profit, 85 to 125 percent is typical, and above 125 percent needs premium service to justify it.
Lawn mowing rates per hour in the model run from USD 20 to USD 200, and the default is USD 60. The minimum lawn mowing fee runs from USD 20 to USD 150, and the default is USD 40.
Card 2: Price Per Acre Calculator
Card 2 works as a lawn mowing price calculator for any acreage, state and service level. It multiplies the base curve by four modifiers: service level (0.8 for mow only up to 1.5 for premium with cleanup), frequency, contract discount and state.
Frequency matters. Weekly cuts use 1.0, every two weeks 1.12, monthly 1.4, a one-time cut 1.6 and a first cut of an overgrown lawn 1.9. For a one-time job, set visits per year to 1, so the annual total makes sense.
Quick answer: a one-acre first cut on an overgrown lawn prices at USD 190 in the model.
Card 3: Mowing Time and Speed Calculator
Card 3 turns deck width, ground speed, overlap and efficiency into acres per hour. Many readers search for the field capacity formula for mowing, and this card is the plain version. The result is your effective field capacity, which is the acres you actually finish each hour.
Formula box
Acres per hour = miles per hour (mph) x (deck width in feet x (1 – overlap)) / 8.25 x efficiency
Hours = acres / acres per hour
The 8.25 comes from 43,560 sq ft per acre divided by 5,280 feet per mile. Effective swath width is the deck width after overlap, and field efficiency is the share of time spent actually cutting.
How long does it take to mow an acre? A 60-inch zero-turn at 6 mph, 10 percent overlap and 85 percent efficiency covers 2.78 acres per hour.
That mows one acre in about 22 minutes. A 21-inch push mower at 2.5 mph takes about 2.5 hours for the same acre.
Efficiency is the biggest hidden variable. Open ground can reach 85 percent, while fences, trees and gates can drop it toward 60 percent. Time five real jobs and replace the default with your own number.
Card 3 shows mowing time only. Before you carry the time into Cards 4, 11 and 12, add the trimming and setup minutes from Card 1. For a full speed-planning tool, use the acres per hour calculator.
Worked Examples With Real Numbers
Every figure below comes from the calculator formulas, rounded to the cent.
Example 1: An 11,000 sq ft Lawn, Start to Finish
The lawn is flat, has a few trees and beds, and gets a 30-inch walk-behind mower. The target is 60 USD per hour with a 40 USD minimum.
- Area: 0.2525 acres.
- Mowing: 21 minutes. Trimming: 13 minutes. Setup: 15 minutes.
- Total: 49 minutes, which prices at USD 49.07.
Round that to a flat 50 USD weekly price. The model price is 92 percent of the typical 53.28 USD, and the flat price is 94 percent. Over a 24-visit season, 50 USD per visit is USD 1,200 a year, or USD 100 per month over 12 months.
Example 2: A 20,000 sq ft Lawn With Real-World Friction
This lot has a gentle slope, many obstacles and tall grass. Using a 48-inch zero-turn at 75 USD per hour with a 45 USD minimum, the model returns USD 68.81. That is 102 percent of the typical price for the lot size.
Example 3: A Half-Acre Over a Full Year
At the national average, a half-acre costs USD 70.20 per visit. Across 28 visits, that is USD 1,965.72 a year.
Example 4: A Two-Acre Crew Job
A two-acre lot prices at USD 151.88 on the national curve. A two-person crew that spends 1.5 hours each on the lot and needs a 30 percent margin must charge USD 168.17, as shown under job costing below. That is about 111 percent of the typical price, which sits inside the normal band.
Experiment: What Changes the Price Most?
We took the 11,000 sq ft lawn and changed one variable at a time.
Table 4: One-variable experiment on the 11,000 sq ft lawn
| Change | Labor-based price | Final price | Change vs base |
| Base case | USD 49.07 | USD 49.07 | 0% |
| 48-inch zero-turn instead of walk-behind | USD 35.81 | USD 40.00 | -18% |
| Tall grass (4 to 8 inches) | USD 55.32 | USD 55.32 | +13% |
| Very cluttered obstacles | USD 59.91 | USD 59.91 | +22% |
| Steep slopes | USD 59.48 | USD 59.48 | +21% |
| Overgrown grass (8 inches or more) | USD 65.73 | USD 65.73 | +34% |
Overgrown grass raised the price 34 percent, steep slopes raised it 21 percent, and a faster mower lowered it only to the 40 USD minimum. A faster mower cannot cut a price below the floor set by travel, setup and trimming.
A second test changes the hourly rate and the minimum charge.
Table 5: Rate and minimum charge test on the same lawn
| Change | Labor-based price | Final price |
| Rate 20 percent lower (48 USD per hour) | USD 39.25 | USD 40.00 |
| Base rate (60 USD per hour) | USD 49.07 | USD 49.07 |
| Rate 20 percent higher (72 USD per hour) | USD 58.88 | USD 58.88 |
| Minimum charge raised to 60 USD | USD 49.07 | USD 60.00 |
A rate 20 percent lower hits the 40 USD floor, a rate 20 percent higher adds 20 percent, and a 60 USD minimum overrides the labor price entirely. The minimum charge matters most on small lots.
Per Hour, Per Job or Per Month: Choosing a Pricing Model
Four pricing models work for mowing, and each fits a different lot. Card 1 prices by time, so the real question is when to turn that time price into a flat one. Our example is the 11,000 sq ft lawn.
Table 6: Pricing models compared on the 11,000 sq ft lawn
| Model | Best for | Strength | Weakness | Example |
| Per hour | First visits, cleanups, irregular lots | Matches true time | Customers dislike open-ended bills | 49 minutes at 60 USD per hour = USD 49.07 |
| Per job | Repeat customers | Simple and predictable | Needs honest time tracking | Flat USD 50 per visit |
| Per square foot | Quick screening of open lots | Easy to explain | Fails on cluttered, trim-heavy lots | USD 4.46 per 1,000 sq ft |
| Per month | Steady cash flow | Fewer billing disputes | Rain delays cut real visits | USD 100 per month over 12 months |
Per hour suits unknown jobs. Per job suits routes you know well. Per square foot works as a screen, and per month works for seasonal plans.
The decision rule is simple. Use time to build the quote, then show the customer a flat price. Set a monthly fee from expected visits, not calendar weeks, since rain delays make real visits fewer than planned.
Pricing for Pros: How Much to Charge for Lawn Mowing
Lawn care pricing starts with your costs, not your competitors. Lawn mowing business pricing also needs a margin, a minimum charge and a clear view of your fixed costs.
Used together, the twelve cards work as a lawn care cost calculator that spans mowing, add-ons, cleanup, hedges and treatments. The table below shows what Cards 4 to 12 do.
Table 7: Cards 4 to 12 at a glance
| Card | What it does | Key output |
| 4 Job costing | Builds a price from labor, fuel, equipment, travel and overhead | Price for your target margin |
| 5 Add-ons | Prices edging, trimming, blowing and bagging | Total visit price with extras |
| 6 Yard cleanup | Prices leaf, brush and debris removal | Cleanup price and cost per acre |
| 7 Hedges | Prices hedges by length, height and scope | Trimming price and price per foot |
| 8 Seasonal plan | Projects visits and yearly cost | Annual cost and monthly average |
| 9 Fertilizer | Costs a full-year treatment program | Annual program price |
| 10 Break-even | Tests business profit after tax | Net profit and break-even lawns |
| 11 DIY vs hire | Compares owning a mower with paying a service | Savings over several years |
| 12 Crews | Models lawns per day by crew size | Lawns per day and revenue per labor hour |
Cards 4 to 7 price jobs and add-ons, Cards 8 and 9 plan a season, and Cards 10 to 12 measure profit, DIY savings and crew output.
Who sets the price? Three forces compete: you, the market and your costs. Your costs set the floor, the market sets the ceiling, and your service level decides where you sit between them.
Card 4: Job Costing and Profit Margin
Card 4 turns labor, fuel, equipment and overhead into a price. Many new owners copy a neighbor’s price and then find the margin sits under 10 percent after fuel, travel and repairs.
Formula box
Price = (labor + fuel + equipment + travel) x (1 + overhead) / (1 – margin)
Labor includes the wage and payroll burden. Payroll burden means taxes, insurance and benefits on top of base pay. Overhead covers admin, software and liability cover.
Table 8: Solo job versus two-person crew job
| Item | Solo job | Two-person crew |
| Labor (with burden) | USD 20.16 | USD 69.00 |
| Fuel | USD 2.16 | USD 4.56 |
| Equipment | USD 8.00 | USD 15.00 |
| Travel | USD 7.00 | USD 11.20 |
| Overhead | USD 5.60 | USD 17.96 |
| Total cost | USD 42.92 | USD 117.72 |
| Price at target margin | USD 57.22 (25 percent) | USD 168.17 (30 percent) |
| Profit per visit | USD 14.31 | USD 50.45 |
The solo job costs 42.92 USD and sells for 57.22 USD, while the two-person crew job costs 117.72 USD and sells for 168.17 USD.
Markup Versus Margin
Markup versus margin trips up many owners. Margin is profit divided by price, and markup is profit divided by cost.
A 25 percent margin equals a 33.3 percent markup, and the margin and markup calculator converts between the two. Many owners also check results with a gross margin calculator.
Three more inputs deserve links. Model fuel on its own with the fuel cost calculator, and check drive costs with the gas mileage calculator. Convert a yearly pay goal into an hourly figure with the salary to hourly calculator, and plan invoices with the billable hours calculator.
Mileage, Fuel and Revenue Per Labor Hour
The card charges 0.70 USD per mile for the vehicle, round trip, and you cannot edit it. The IRS set the 2026 business standard mileage rate at 72.5 cents per mile, and a later IRS revision reportedly raised it to 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026. Check the current rate on irs.gov, then adjust your drive cost by hand.
Revenue per labor hour is the price divided by total worker hours. A planning target is above 50 USD per labor hour. That figure is a modeled rule of thumb, not a surveyed benchmark.
If your crew pays overtime on long days, the overtime pay calculator shows the extra labor cost.
Edging, Trimming and Blowing Add-ons (Card 5)
Card 5 prices the work around every mow. The model assumes about 900 feet of edging per hour and 600 feet of string trimming per hour. Blowing takes about 7 minutes and bagging about 15 minutes per visit.
Formula box
Add-on = (edging feet / 900 + trim feet / 600) x difficulty x rate + blowing 0.12 hour x rate + bagging 0.25 hour x rate
How much to charge for edging and trimming? Divide the feet by those hourly rates, multiply by a difficulty factor of 1.0, 1.2 or 1.5, and apply your rate. For 400 feet of edging, 200 feet of trimming and blowing at 60 USD per hour, the add-ons come to USD 63.20, made of USD 32.00 for edging, USD 24.00 for trimming and USD 7.20 for blowing.
That lifts a 60 USD mowing visit to USD 123.20, so add-ons make up 51 percent of the price. When add-ons pass 35 percent, move to a flat package. Quote edging and trimming apart on the first visit, then fold them into a stable per-visit price once you know the true time.
For edging length, use the linear foot calculator, and size bed work with the mulch calculator. Adding a driveway wash is an upsell, and the pressure washing estimate calculator prices it.
Yard Cleanup Cost Calculator (Card 6)
Card 6 prices leaf, brush and debris removal. Inputs include yard size, debris level, crew size, labor rate, cubic yards hauled, dump fee, truck fee and equipment fee. Debris level sets the person-hours per acre: 3 for light leaves, 6 for moderate, 12 for heavy overgrowth and 20 for storm damage.
Formula box
Price = acres x hours per acre x rate + haul fee + cubic yards x dump fee + equipment fee
A half-acre of moderate debris with 4 cubic yards hauled costs USD 335. Labor is USD 180, hauling and dump fees are USD 130 and equipment is USD 25. That is USD 670 per acre, with a two-person crew on site for 1.5 hours.
Cleanups are priced on uncertainty. Walk the property first, count truck loads and quote a range with a cap. Add a 15 to 25 percent contingency for storm debris and overgrown brush, which is a modeled planning range.
Estimate debris volume with the cubic yard calculator. If you know the area and depth, the square feet to cubic yards calculator does the conversion.
Quick answers on yard cleanup:
- What does yard cleanup cost per acre? The model gives USD 670 per acre for moderate debris, and USD 1,035 for a heavy one-acre job with 8 cubic yards hauled.
- Why do dump fees vary? Wet debris and soil weigh more, and local landfill fees differ.
Hedge and Shrub Trimming Cost (Card 7)
Card 7 prices hedges by length, height and scope. Scope multipliers are 1.0 for top and front only, 1.5 for top and both sides and 1.8 for a full reshape. Productivity falls with height: 120 feet per hour up to 4 feet tall, 80 up to 6, 50 up to 8, 30 up to 12 and 20 above that.
Formula box
Price = max(75 USD, (feet x scope / feet per hour + shrubs x 0.1 hour) x rate x (1 + cleanup))
A 120-foot, 5-foot-tall hedge with both sides trimmed, 6 shrubs shaped and cleanup bagged costs USD 196.65. That is USD 1.64 per hedge foot. A 200-foot, 7-foot hedge with a full reshape and 12 shrubs costs USD 579.60, or USD 2.90 per foot.
Short jobs are floored at 75 USD to cover travel and setup, and you can bundle a hedge job with a mowing visit to waive that minimum. Height is the hidden multiplier. Above 8 feet the job usually needs a ladder or lift, so productivity roughly halves.
Quick answers on hedge trimming:
- What is the hedge trimming cost per foot? The model shows USD 1.64 to USD 2.90 per foot in the two examples above, and real prices depend on species, access and local rates.
- When should hedges be trimmed? Most species do well with a trim in late spring and again in late summer.
Seasonal Plans and Annual Costs (Card 8)
Card 8 projects visits and yearly cost for a growing season. You enter the visit price, start month, season length, visits per peak month, visits per shoulder month and prepay discount. Shoulder months are the first and last months of the season, when growth is slower.
Formula box
Annual cost = sum of monthly visits x price x (1 – prepay discount)
The default start is April, which is month index 3 when January is 0. A seven-month season with 4 visits in peak months and 2 in the shoulder months gives 24 visits. At 50 USD per visit, that is USD 1,200 a year.
Table 9: Two seasonal plans from Card 8
| Plan | Visits | Price per visit | Annual cost | Per month (12 months) | Per active month |
| April start, 7 months, no discount | 24 | USD 50.00 | USD 1,200 | USD 100.00 | USD 171.43 |
| April start, 8 months, 5 percent prepay discount | 28 | USD 57.00 (from USD 60) | USD 1,596 | USD 133.00 | USD 199.50 |
An April start with seven months and 24 visits costs 1,200 USD a year, and an eight-month plan with 28 visits and a 5 percent prepay discount costs 1,596 USD.
Customers ask about lawn service cost per month, and this view answers it. Lawn maintenance cost and yard work cost both fall into the same plan.
Customers like a fixed monthly fee, and it reduces billing disputes. Prepay discounts of 5 to 10 percent are common, but that range has no named source here, so test it in your own market. Compute any discount with the percentage discount calculator.
Fertilizer and Treatment Programs (Card 9)
Card 9 costs a full-year treatment program. A program is a set of timed applications of fertilizer, weed control and other treatments. The package factor scales product cost: 1.0 for fertilizer only, 1.5 with weed control, 1.9 with grub and insect control, and 2.6 for a full program with aeration and overseeding.
Define the terms. Aeration pulls small plugs of soil to loosen compacted ground, and overseeding spreads new seed over an existing lawn. Grub control treats lawn-eating beetle larvae in the soil.
Formula box
Price = (sq ft / 1,000 x product cost x applications x package) x (1 + markup) + labor x applications
Take an 11,000 sq ft lawn, 5 rounds, a 5 USD product cost per 1,000 sq ft, the weed-control package and a 30 percent markup. Products cost USD 412.50, markup adds USD 123.75 and labor adds USD 82.50. The program prices at USD 618.75 a year, or USD 123.75 per application.
The card scales product cost by package but not labor. On full programs, add labor for aeration and overseeding yourself. Link new-turf work to the sod calculator, the square yards calculator and the soil calculator.
Quick answers on fertilizer programs:
- How much does a lawn fertilizer program cost? The model gives USD 56.25 per 1,000 sq ft per year for the example above.
- When should applications happen? Time them to soil temperature rather than the calendar.
Break-even and Business Profit (Card 10)
Card 10 shows how many lawns a business needs to cover costs and what it keeps after tax. Break-even lawns equal fixed costs divided by the profit each lawn contributes after variable cost. Contribution margin is that per-lawn profit.
Inputs are average price per lawn, lawns per day, working days per week, season weeks, variable cost per lawn, fixed costs per month, an optional extra annual cost and a tax rate. Outputs are annual net profit, annual revenue, break-even volume, net margin and profit per lawn.
Formula box
Break-even lawns = fixed costs / (price – variable cost)
Net = (revenue – variable cost – fixed costs) x (1 – tax rate)
Is Starting a Lawn Mowing Business Profitable?
It can be, but the numbers decide. We ran three scenarios, all modeled.
Table 10: Three Card 10 scenarios
| Scenario | Setup | Net profit after tax | Net margin | Break-even |
| Solo part-time | 55 USD per lawn, 8 lawns a day, 2 days a week, 28 weeks, 600 USD monthly fixed costs, 20 percent tax | USD 7,501 | 30.4 percent | 195 lawns a year (7.0 a week) |
| Solo full-time | 55 USD per lawn, 8 lawns a day, 5 days a week, 30 weeks, 1,500 USD monthly fixed costs, 20 percent tax | USD 21,120 | 32.0 percent | 487 lawns a year (16.2 a week) |
| Two-person crew | 60 USD per lawn, 10 lawns a day, 5 days a week, 32 weeks, 2,000 USD monthly fixed costs, 22 percent tax | USD 31,200 | 32.5 percent | 600 lawns a year (18.8 a week) |
The solo full-time case earns USD 21,120 on USD 66,000 of revenue, and it needs 487 lawns a year to break even.
Beware the owner-pay trap. These margins sit above the 10 to 25 percent often quoted for small lawn businesses, and that range has no named source here.
The reason is that the 18 USD variable cost per lawn covers fuel, disposal and supplies, not a wage for the owner. At 8 hours a day over 150 days, the USD 21,120 equals about USD 17.60 per owner hour.
Can you make a living mowing lawns? Possibly, once you count your own pay and fixed costs. Most failed lawn businesses fail on fixed costs, not on price, so know your lawn count before you buy a truck or trailer.
Plan for taxes monthly. Sole proprietors report business income on Schedule C and pay self-employment tax, and the model defaults to 20 to 22 percent as a placeholder.
Run your own numbers with the income tax calculator and confirm the rate with a licensed tax professional. For an equipment loan, the business loan calculator estimates the payment.
Crew Size and Route Density (Card 12)
Card 12 models lawns per day and revenue per labor hour for crews of one to six. Inputs are average price per lawn, on-site minutes, drive minutes between lawns, crew size, crew efficiency gain, workday length and loading and break minutes. Outputs are lawns per day, revenue per day, revenue per labor hour, drive-time share and best crew size.
Formula box
On-site minutes = minutes / (1 + (crew – 1) x gain)
Lawns per day = (day minutes – breaks) / (on-site minutes + drive minutes)
Route density means how close your stops are to each other. Drive-time share is the part of each lawn cycle spent driving, and above 30 percent means your routes need tightening.
How Many Lawns Can One Person Mow in a Day?
With 35 minutes on site, 10 minutes of driving, an 8-hour day and 45 minutes of breaks, one worker finishes 9.7 lawns. At 60 USD per lawn, that is USD 580 a day. Real crews usually reach 60 to 70 percent of the full-day mowing figure, which is a rule of thumb without a named source.
Table 11: Crew size scenarios (70 percent crew efficiency gain, 60 USD per lawn)
| Crew | Lawns per day | Revenue per day | Revenue per labor hour | Profit after wages | Drive-time share |
| 1 worker | 9.7 | USD 580 | USD 72.50 | USD 418.72 | 22% |
| 2 workers | 14.2 | USD 853 | USD 53.33 | USD 530.71 | 33% |
| 3 workers | 17.7 | USD 1,062 | USD 44.24 | USD 577.85 | 41% |
| 4 workers | 20.4 | USD 1,226 | USD 38.31 | USD 580.79 | 47% |
A solo worker finishes 9.7 lawns for 580 USD a day, while a crew of four finishes 20.4 lawns for 1,226 USD.
Revenue per labor hour always favors a solo worker, because each added worker adds less. So do not pick a crew size from that column alone.
The last column subtracts wages of 18 USD per hour plus 12 percent payroll burden for every worker, owner included, and it shows the best result at three to four workers. It ignores fuel, equipment and overhead, so treat it as a first screen.
Route density beats crew size. Two workers with 5-minute drives often earn more per labor hour than three workers with 15-minute drives. Group customers by neighborhood and mow on a fixed weekday route.
What Do I Tell Customers Who Want a Lower Price?
Point to the minimum charge and offer a package instead of a discount. A flat seasonal plan, a bi-weekly schedule or fewer add-ons lowers the bill without cutting your margin.
DIY vs Hiring a Lawn Service (Card 11)
Card 11 compares owning a mower with paying a service over several years. You enter mower price, life, resale value, yearly fuel and maintenance, mows per year, time per mow, the value of your time, the hire price and the years to compare.
Formula box
DIY(years) = mower price + years x (fuel and maintenance + mows x hours x time value)
Hire(years) = years x mows x visit price
Table 12: DIY versus hire over 8 years (USD 2,000 mower, 28 mows, 1.25 hours each, USD 60 hire price)
| Value of your time | DIY yearly running cost | Hire yearly cost | Net DIY cost at 8 years | Hire total | Result |
| USD 15 per hour | USD 775 | USD 1,680 | USD 7,900 | USD 13,440 | DIY saves USD 5,540 |
| USD 40 per hour | USD 1,650 | USD 1,680 | USD 14,900 | USD 13,440 | Hiring saves USD 1,460 |
At 15 USD per hour of your time, DIY saves 5,540 USD over eight years. At 40 USD per hour, hiring saves 1,460 USD, and the break-even stretches to 66.7 years.
Most homeowners underestimate the cost of their own time. If an hour of your free time is worth more than a crew’s hourly price, hiring wins even when the mower is paid off. Large lots above one acre tilt toward owning a quality mower.
Replacement, Storage and Payback
The card does not add a replacement mower when the years compared exceed mower life. It also leaves out storage and insurance.
If you compare more years than the mower lasts, add a second purchase by hand. Test payback with the payback period calculator, and estimate resale value with the depreciation calculator.
Card 11 accepts mower prices from USD 150 to USD 12,000, so enter a real quote for the mower you are considering. Gas versus battery-electric mowers is a fair question.
Enter your own fuel, charging and maintenance costs in the yearly cost field and compare the results. We do not publish a cost-per-season figure for either type, because the model has no verified data.
Which mower pays for itself fastest? The one that cuts the most hours from your busiest routes. Compare candidates by entering each price and time saving into Card 11 and the payback tool.
Is My Mowing Quote Fair?
Am I being overcharged? Compare the quote with the typical price for your lot size, and read the result as a percent.
Below 85 percent may signal a rushed or underinsured job. Between 85 and 125 percent is typical, and above 125 percent needs premium service behind it.
Use this quote checklist before you say yes:
- What does a standard mow include? Ask about trimming, blowing and edging.
- Does the price cover first cuts, bagging and rain delays?
- Does the company carry general liability insurance?
- What are the cancellation and late-payment terms?
- Are three local quotes comparable line by line?
Real quotes usually land 20 percent below to 25 percent above the model estimate. That band is modeled, so treat it as a guide.
Grass Types, Growth and Visits Per Year
Cool-season and warm-season grasses grow on different calendars. Cool-season types, such as Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue, grow fastest in spring and fall.
Warm-season types, such as Bermuda, zoysia and St. Augustine, grow fastest in summer and run longer seasons in the South.
Height sets how often a lawn needs mowing. The UC IPM program at the University of California states the one-third rule: remove no more than one-third of the blade at a time, because cutting more can impair root growth. A University of Kentucky turf specialist recommended 2 to 2.5 inches for Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue, but only 0.5 to 1 inch for Bermuda grass.
That gap changes visit counts. Mississippi State University Extension notes that a bermudagrass lawn kept at 1 inch needs three mowings for every one of a St. Augustine lawn kept at 3 inches, if growth rates match. Card 8 reflects this through its visits per month, where weekly mowing is about 4.3 visits.
Warm regions can run 9 to 12 months, a modeled planning range. Mowing too much at once also leaves the lawn open to weeds and excess thatch, which is a buildup of dead material that dethatching removes. Confirm local heights with your state extension office before you set a plan.
Insurance, Licensing and Contracts for Mowing Businesses
Risk belongs inside the price. General liability insurance covers property damage and injury to others.
Workers compensation insurance covers your employees, and the workers compensation insurance cost calculator estimates that line. Vehicle cover is a third piece.
Licensing and insurance rules vary by state, so confirm them locally. The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) is one industry body that publishes guidance for operators. Apply your state’s sales tax rules correctly, and check them with the sales tax calculator.
Know three pricing words. An estimate is an approximate price, a quote is a firm price and a bid is a competitive offer for a defined scope.
Flat-rate pricing fixes the price, while time-and-materials pricing bills the actual hours and costs. A fuel surcharge adds a line when pump prices spike.
A service contract should state the scope, schedule, rain-delay policy, cancellation terms and late-payment terms. Have a lawyer review any contract template before you rely on it. Commercial and residential work also differ: commercial lots are larger and denser, and they usually run on written contracts.
Common Mistakes and Pro Tips
Common Pricing Mistakes
- Copying a competitor’s price without checking your cost.
- Mixing up markup and margin.
- Forgetting drive time and overhead.
- Skipping the minimum charge and a first-cut surcharge.
- Using default efficiency without timing real jobs.
- Leaving first cuts and rain delays out of a written agreement.
Pro Tips
- Time five real jobs and replace the default efficiency number.
- Quote edging separately on the first visit.
- Reserve tax money every month, not at year end.
- Give customers a flat price built from time.
- Review rates every quarter and republish once a year.
Limits, Safety and Edge Cases
Results are estimates, and real jobs have edges the model cannot see. Each point below stands on its own.
Slopes. Follow the mower manual’s slope limit, and skip any slope the manual says to avoid. ANSI/OPEI B71.1 covers safety specifications for consumer walk-behind and ride-on mowers, and commercial machines fall under a separate B71.4 standard. Check the manual rather than this page for the actual limit.
Insurance and liability. One thrown stone can break a window. Carry the right cover before you take paid jobs, and confirm requirements with your state.
Weather. Rain delays shrink real visits below planned visits, so price seasonal plans on expected visits. Wet grass also slows mowing and clumps clippings.
Mulching versus bagging. Bagging adds about 15 minutes per visit, which is USD 15.00 at 60 USD per hour. Mowing within the one-third rule lets clippings drop into the turf and break down quickly, according to Mississippi State University Extension, so mulching can save the bagging time.
Customer churn. Customers leave over sudden price jumps or missed visits. Raise rates once a year in small steps, explain the cost drivers and keep the route reliable.
Contracts and routes. Tie contracts to a seasonal plan, and drop routes whose drive-time share stays above 30 percent.
Pets and debris. Toys, sticks, pet waste and furniture add time on site. Walk the lawn before each mow and add a line for heavy debris.
Region and currency. This page uses US dollars and US state factors. If you work outside the United States, replace the wage, fuel and mileage inputs with local values, and treat the state table as a US reference only.
Methods, Assumptions and Sources
Every number here comes from the calculator formulas. Constants are modeled assumptions unless a source is named.
Table 13: Constants and where they come from
| Constant | Meaning | Source or label |
| 43,560 sq ft per acre | Area of one acre | Standard definition |
| 8.25 | 43,560 / 5,280 feet per mile | Derived |
| 30 + 70 x acres^0.8 | National price curve | Modeled fit |
| 0.25 hour | Setup time per visit | Modeled assumption |
| 0.1 + 0.2 x square root of acres | Trimming time in hours | Modeled assumption |
| 0.82 to 1.35 | State factors | Modeled assumptions |
| 0.70 USD per mile | Vehicle cost in Card 4 | 2025 IRS rate; see below |
| 20 to 22 percent | Default tax rate | Placeholder; confirm with a tax professional |
What changed in 2026? The IRS business mileage rate rose from 70 cents in 2025 to 72.5 cents per mile for 2026, and a July revision reportedly moved it to 76 cents.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program reports a national median wage of USD 18.82 per hour for landscaping and groundskeeping workers (SOC 37-3011) in May 2025, according to a secondary summary of the agency’s data. Verify the figure on bls.gov before you rely on it. Check pump prices on the US Energy Information Administration site, since fuel changes weekly.

Key Takeaway
Key takeaway: Price a mow from time and cost, not from area or a neighbor’s rate. Measure the lawn with the square footage calculator, time the job with the acres per hour calculator, and test your margin with the margin and markup calculator. Then turn the time price into a flat price, add a minimum charge and check the result against the market.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does lawn mowing cost per visit?
In the lawn mowing cost calculator model, a quarter-acre lawn costs about USD 53 per visit at the national average. A half-acre costs about USD 70 and a one-acre lot about USD 100. Slopes, tall grass and extra services raise those modeled prices.
How much does it cost to mow a quarter-acre lawn?
At the national average, the model prices a quarter-acre lawn of 10,890 sq ft at USD 53.09 per visit. The state factor then changes the price, from USD 43.53 in Mississippi to USD 71.67 in Hawaii.
How much should I charge for lawn mowing?
Start with your costs, not your competitors’ prices. Add labor, fuel, equipment, travel and overhead, then divide by one minus your margin. A 25 to 35 percent margin is a planning range that leaves room for slow weeks and repairs.
How much should I charge per hour to mow lawns?
The calculator accepts hourly rates from USD 20 to USD 200, and its default is USD 60. Pick a rate that covers wages, payroll burden, fuel, equipment, travel and overhead, then adds your margin. Test the rate in the job costing card.
What is the average price per acre for lawn mowing?
The model shows about USD 100 per acre at one acre and USD 140 at half an acre. At two acres it falls to USD 75.94 per acre, and at five acres to USD 56.73. Treat price per acre as a sanity check, not a quoting method.
Why does a small lawn cost more per acre?
Setup, travel and trimming take about the same time on any lot. On a small lawn, that fixed time spreads over fewer acres. A 5,000 sq ft lawn with a push mower prices at USD 44.74, or about USD 390 per acre.
Should I charge per hour or per job for lawn mowing?
Build the quote from time, then give the customer a flat price. Hourly billing suits first visits, cleanups and irregular lots. A flat rate suits repeat customers once you know the average time.
What is a fair minimum charge for lawn mowing?
A fair minimum covers travel and setup on every visit. The calculator default is USD 40, and you can choose any value from USD 20 to USD 150. Set yours from your own drive time, setup time and hourly rate.
How much does a first cut on an overgrown lawn cost?
In the model, grass 8 inches or taller multiplies mowing time by 1.8, not the total price. For an 11,000 sq ft lawn, that raised the price from USD 49.07 to USD 65.73, or 34 percent. The per-acre card applies a first-cut factor of 1.9 to the whole visit price, which gives USD 190 for one acre.
Do lawn companies charge more for tall or overgrown grass?
Many companies do. In the model, grass 4 to 8 inches tall multiplies mowing time by 1.3, and grass 8 inches or more multiplies it by 1.8. Trimming and setup time do not change, so the total price rises less than those factors suggest.
Is it cheaper to mow my own lawn or hire a lawn service?
It depends on what your time is worth. With a USD 2,000 mower, 28 mows a year and time valued at USD 15 per hour, do-it-yourself (DIY) saved USD 5,540 over 8 years. At USD 40 per hour, hiring saved USD 1,460.
How long does it take to mow one acre?
A 60-inch zero-turn mower at 6 miles per hour (mph), with 10 percent overlap and 85 percent efficiency, mows an acre in about 22 minutes. A 21-inch push mower at 2.5 mph takes about 2.5 hours. Time a few real jobs and use your own numbers.
How much does a lawn mowing service cost per month?
Divide the annual cost by 12 for a smoothed monthly bill. A 24-visit season at USD 50 per visit costs USD 1,200 a year, or USD 100 per month over 12 months. Billing only the seven active months raises that to about USD 171 per month.
How many lawns can one person mow in a day?
With 35 minutes on site, 10 minutes of driving, an 8-hour day and 45 minutes of breaks, the model shows 9.7 lawns for one worker. At USD 60 per lawn, that is USD 580 a day. Real routes vary, so time your own jobs.
Is a lawn mowing business profitable?
It can be, if prices cover all costs and the owner gets paid. In the model, a solo operator with 8 lawns a day, 5 days a week and 30 weeks nets USD 21,120 after tax, a 32 percent margin. That figure does not include a wage for the owner, so true profit is lower.
How much does it cost to mow a lawn per square foot?
In the model, an 11,000 sq ft lawn costs about USD 4.46 per 1,000 sq ft per visit, which is under half a cent per square foot. A 5,000 sq ft lawn costs about USD 8.95 per 1,000 sq ft because setup time stays fixed. Price from time, not square footage.
Is this the cost of a lawn mower or of mowing a lawn?
This calculator prices the service of mowing a lawn, not the purchase of a lawn mower. To compare buying a mower with hiring a service, use the DIY versus hiring card, which includes mower price, running cost and resale value.
How much does lawn mowing cost in my state?
Multiply the national price by your state factor. The model’s factors run from 0.82 in Mississippi to 1.35 in Hawaii, so a one-acre lot costs USD 82 to USD 135 per visit. Factors are modeled assumptions, so confirm them with local quotes.
Conclusion and Next Step
Measure the lawn, time the work, add your real costs, set a margin and check the market. That five-step habit turns a guess into a price you can defend. Open the lawn mowing cost calculator at the top of this page and run your own lot.
